🍌 How long do bananas last?
Guideline times for a product stored properly, with the fridge at 4 °C or below.
| Where | How long |
|---|---|
| At room temperature | 3–7 days |
| In the fridge | 2–3 days |
| In the freezer | 2–3 months |
To make it last longer
- Keep them out of the fridge and away from other fruit: they ripen everything near them.
- Once ripe, the fridge buys them a few more days: the skin darkens but the inside stays good.
- Too ripe? Peel, slice and freeze them: perfect for smoothies and banana bread.
When to throw it away
Mould, a fermented or alcoholic smell, flesh that's runny. Dark spots on the skin just mean they're very sweet.
These are general guidelines and don't replace what's written on the pack: if the label says something different, follow the label. "Use by" is a real expiry date; "best before" is about quality. If in doubt, don't eat it. The difference between the two dates →
