π How long does bread last?
Guideline times for a product stored properly, with the fridge at 4 Β°C or below.
| Where | How long |
|---|---|
| At room temperature | 1β2 days |
| In the fridge | not recommended |
| In the freezer | up to 3 months |
To make it last longer
- Keep it in a paper or cloth bag, not plastic: it goes mouldy sooner.
- In the fridge it goes stale faster: the freezer is better.
- Slice it before freezing: you can toast the slices straight from frozen.
- Don't throw away stale bread: breadcrumbs, croutons, panzanella, bread dumplings.
When to throw it away
Mould, even in a single spot: throw away the whole loaf, because mould spreads inside even where you can't see it.
These are general guidelines and don't replace what's written on the pack: if the label says something different, follow the label. "Use by" is a real expiry date; "best before" is about quality. If in doubt, don't eat it. The difference between the two dates β
