🍗 How long does raw chicken last?
Guideline times for a product stored properly, with the fridge at 4 °C or below.
| Where | How long |
|---|---|
| In the fridge | 1–2 days |
| In the freezer | up to 9 months |
| Cooked, in the fridge | 2–3 days |
To make it last longer
- Don't rinse it under the tap: splashes spread bacteria around the sink. Cooking kills them.
- Keep it on the bottom shelf, in a container, so it doesn't drip onto other food.
- Thaw it in the fridge and cook it until it's no longer pink inside.
When to throw it away
Sour or rotten-egg smell, slimy or sticky surface, greyish colour.
These are general guidelines and don't replace what's written on the pack: if the label says something different, follow the label. "Use by" is a real expiry date; "best before" is about quality. If in doubt, don't eat it. The difference between the two dates →
